Micrometers
Pick the wrong micrometer type and you'll be fighting the tool before you ever get to the part. Fowler's micrometers split into three reading methods: electronic (a screen, fastest to read), digit counter (a mechanical number wheel, no battery), and vernier (fully mechanical, read off two scales). Beyond that, the collection covers application-specific types too, depth, inside, and specialty anvils for grooves, threads, and other features a standard outside micrometer can't reach.

How to choose
Reading method
Electronic vs. digit counter vs. vernier
Electronic micrometers show the reading on an LCD instantly, at the cost of a battery. Digit counter micrometers convert the same measurement to a mechanical number wheel, no battery, faster to read than a vernier scale, but a step up in cost from a plain mechanical mic. Vernier micrometers are the traditional fully mechanical option: nothing to charge or replace, but reading the scale takes practice.
Beyond outside diameter
Application-specific types
A standard outside micrometer measures between two flat faces. Depth micrometers add a base and rod for measuring how deep a hole or step goes. Inside micrometers measure bores and openings instead of outside dimensions. Specialty micrometers swap the anvil shape entirely, points, discs, blades, and spline contacts, for grooves, threads, and other features a flat-faced mic can't reach.
Environment
IP ratings matter here too
Like calipers, micrometers carry IP ratings when protection matters: IP54 for dust and light splash, IP65 or IP67 for sustained coolant exposure. If the mic lives at the machine rather than on a bench, check the rating before assuming any electronic micrometer will hold up there.
Common questions
A digit counter micrometer is fully mechanical, a number wheel driven by the spindle, no battery. An electronic micrometer uses a battery-powered LCD display instead. Digit counter mics cost less to own long-term since there's no battery to replace, but electronic mics are faster to read and often add features like data output.
Yes. A standard outside micrometer can't reach inside a bore. Fowler's inside micrometers are built for that, in small-range jaw styles for holes under about 2.2" and extension-rod styles for larger bores up to 12" or more.
Yes. A quality vernier micrometer holds the same accuracy as a comparable digit counter or electronic model, typically 0.0002" or better. The difference is entirely in reading speed, not measurement precision.
