Indicators - Dial

Two dial indicators can hold the exact same accuracy grade and still not fit your fixture. Fowler's dial indicators read straight-line plunger travel on a mechanical dial, in the AGD Group 2 sizes most fixtures and stands are built around. Ranges run from 0.05" to 2", in black or white face, standard or with a NIST Certificate of Calibration, plus combo sets that pair an indicator with a magnetic base.

How to choose

Face color

Black dial vs. white dial

Same logic as dial calipers: black-dial indicators read better under bright shop lighting or glare, white-dial is the traditional choice for typical indoor lighting. Neither changes the accuracy.

Range and calibration

Standard vs. premium with a Certificate of Calibration

A standard dial indicator meets the same accuracy grade as the premium version. The difference is the NIST Certificate of Calibration included with the premium line, which matters if the shop needs documented traceability for quality records, not just a working tool.

Mounting

Buying a combo set vs. an indicator alone

A fine-adjust or flex-arm magnetic base with dial indicator combo set is worth it if the shop doesn't already have a compatible base. Buying them together is usually cheaper than sourcing a base separately, and guarantees the mounting stem sizes match.

Common questions

AGD, American Gage Design, standardizes dial indicator dimensions and mounting so indicators, bases, and accessories from different lines fit together predictably. Group 2 is the most common size for general shop and inspection use.

If the shop needs documented traceability for quality records or customer audits, yes. If the indicator is for general setup and checking work without a formal QC requirement, the standard version measures to the same accuracy without the paperwork.

Only if the mounting stem sizes match. Fowler's combo sets are guaranteed to pair correctly since they're sold together. Buying an indicator separately from an existing base means checking the stem diameter on both first.
