really disappointed at Fowler quality control. no screws in the back of the dial indicator. found one screw in the blue case hap hazardly placed in the case. reqlly disappointes i needed this to check pinion clearance. the last one was passed down to me from my grandfather. might have to look elsewhere for precision tools.
Item arrived missing 3 of the screws that hold the dial together. I could have bought the 40 dollar one instead of this 67 dollar MIC garbage but nooooo! "Get a Fowler" they said. "It will be better quality" they said. Bottom line is if it is MIC it's not worth more than 40 dollars regardless of whose name is on it. Item returned.
The base is nice. Good finish quality on the wrinkle coated portions. Magnetic base works as it should. The dial itself is decent at best. Turning the dial to 0 sometimes doesn't turn with the ring. The indicator shaft sticks for the first 10 thousandths or so of movement. It is not smooth. My case was damaged when I received. See the pics. Overall the base is great. Good quality. The dial leaves a bit to be desired. This would do fine for many entry level uses. I wouldn't use this for anything I need high precision reliability for. The case I can live with. Where it was damaged doesn't look like it would cause issues with the dial.
I work at a heavy equipment dealer and use this tool to set up bearing end play and check gear backlash in engines and transmissions. It works great.
The tools delivered in July of 26' are China. Was under the impression prior to buying I escaped that trash. Returning them. You have to badger Alexa, after a few times it will admit too it.
Received a clearly used and returned item. The case arrived broken — the same defect called out in another one-star review on this listing, which tells me Amazon is recirculating returned units rather than pulling defective stock. The gauge itself is not functioning as a precision instrument should. The bezel adjustment is unreliable and the needle does not return to zero consistently — which is a fundamental failure for a tool whose entire purpose is repeatable, accurate measurement.Fowler's reputation suggests a certain standard. This product does not meet it. At this price point you expect at least functional QA — instead you get a repackaged return with a broken case and a gauge you can't trust. Returning it and sourcing a Mitutoyo instead. Should have done that from the start.
I used the Fowler Dial Indicator with magnetic base to check the runout on my roommate's drill press. I used it to detect runout on a large drill bit to determine how much my drilled holes would be off. I used the measurement to determine that I needed to get a replacement chuck - one that was not so worn out. After the new chuck was installed, the run out now reads 0.005. That's better than the 0.010 where it started. I would also replace the spindle because the taper was also damaged. THAT part is no longer available. My Fowler Dial Indicator is a very useful tool. The magnet grabbed the drill press drilling table very solidly. Once I figured out how to set it up, it was easy to use. The price was very affordable and it's the right size for what I'm trying to do. I'll use it again for hole depth measurement.
The case was cracked and was misshapen. I should have returned it right then and there, but was more interested in the indicator than its blown plastic case. Unfortunately, the indicator has been sitting in said case locked in its own drawer in my toolbox between uses. I recently opened it only to see that the back plate screws had all fallen out inside the case. I'm not sure if I received a defective product given the other high reviews, but considering I purchased in October, I'm not at all satisfied. It just seems to be one flaw after another.
Perfectly allows me to set back lash in axle rebuilding and is a very accurate high quality dial indicator. The magnetic base is plenty strong to keep it in position for accurate measurements and comes with a well made protective storage case to keep it in good condition for along time. You cant go cheap on precision instruments like this. However this one is priced very affordable and you wont be disappointed in the quality of product your getting making it a great value
All 4 screws fell out. After making it through my regear job it now sticks and doesn't work properly. Go with a better brand.
I have other indicators.. even cheaper ones.. that are good build quality and have performed well even getting used everyday on a mill as I’m a machinist. I got this one because I heard good things about Fowler but this indicator fell apart after a couple weeks of light use. The plastic broke on the handle to tighten it. And the whole back fell off which lost the small screws in my mill. I would recommend just getting either a cheaper one or more expensive one and avoid this indicator.
This arrived in one piece, no parts floating around in the box, and functional. I didn’t require a much higher level tool, or I would have gone for a Starrett branded one, but guess what - the Starrett tools below a certain price threshold are made offshore as well, and you can pay a lot more for the privilege. I do kinda want to by Starrett branded, since I live one town over from the home of Starrett Tool, but alas. This unit will do what I need for occasional use, and I will allow myself to be fooled into being happier about the ultimate source of it, even though it does have a bit of “name recognition” having Fowler on the dial, instead of something blatantly not.Four stars ‘cus the rotatable dial is a bit difficult.Edited for spelling…how many times have I driven by their buildings with the Starrett name on the roof! Cheeeeeshh!
For the money this is pretty good. The thread on the magnetic mount is pretty sketchy but the dial indicator itself is very accurate. For the price I wouldn't hesitate to buy this again. For context, I used it to measure crankshaft runout on a motorcycle engine. Machine shop specs came back exactly the same as this indicated.
I've used this dial indicator for a while now and I'm pleased with its performance. I work in an industrial setting and some environments and people can be hard on things. It's held up to everyday use . The base is nice and the magnet is strong enough for our purposes. One issue I ran into is the four screws for the back cover did back out after 6 months. I used a small drop on blue loctite on them and haven't had a issue since. If I could I would have done this in the beginning when I received it. The case it comes with is also nice and keeps everything where it belongs. I also bought some foam sheets and cut it to the internal size of the case to help with holding everything tight so it can't pop out of the recessed areas for the different components. I haven't had them actually do this but I just wanted to eliminate that scenario from happening and help cushion everything if the case get dropped or jolted for any reason. This is in no way the most expensive dial indicator you could buy and you should have reasonable expectations to the quality of it. That's not to say it's not accurate as I've done comparisons with other more expensive indicators and it holds it's own.
Used to set the ignition timing on my 2 stroke Yamaha dirt bike
Came in thru ups and the carry case is cracked all across bottom and side.
I've only ever used less expensive dial indicators and this is actually the most expensive one I've bought, however, upon initial inspection the tip does not return to original position once you depress it and it feels very ratchety as your pushing it in. I honestly expected it to be at least as nice as one you would buy at the local super-cheap-not-good-at-all freight store.
Bought this to regear two differentials for my truck, I wish I would have bought a different dial indicator.... Magnet isn't strong enough to hold it in place it constantly shifts positions and throws your reading off, the adjustments of the arm is not great and the bulky knobs make it hard to get it in a good position so the weak magnet will stay attached. The screws on the backing plate kept loosening up and needed constant attention to keep them in. Then on my final backlash measurement the gauge would not reset back to the same position it just seemed to stop where it wanted to figured I'd have nothing to loose since it didn't work anyways I disassembled the gauge and found almost every screw was loose, tightened it all up and still did not function correctly. Now I need to buy another one and hope and pray that the first diff is actually in spec...
Like the case it comes in
Have used this tool to set lash in approximately 20 rear ends now works as well as the high dollar tool truck versions for significantly less
A good value for the money.
First time using black faced instrument.…… I like it!
magnet is a little weak. Otherwise, works good.
I use this to set origin, tram and mesh on CNC routers.
The first one arrived broken . The replacement is in one piece but cheaply made compared the the arsenal of Fowler instruments I use . The $25 Harbor freight dial indicator is actually belter quality
Inexpensive and accurate enough for what I will be using it for.If I decide to build a jet engine I will upgrade.
