Bore Gages - Dial
A bore that's checked at the machine tells you about the next part while there's still time to change it. A dial bore gage puts the reading on a dial at the spindle, with carbide anvils and an insulated grip built for a shop floor. Fowler's line covers 0.7″ to 6″ in fixed-range sets and in X-Tender sets, which reach 1.4″ to 6″ from one gage. Setting master kits for zeroing the gage are on this page too.
How to choose
Range
Fixed-range sets and the X-Tender cover different ground
A fixed-range set is built around one span, 0.7″ to 1.5″ or 2″ to 6″. The X-Tender covers 1.4″ to 6″ (35 to 160 mm) in one set, which takes in the whole 2″ to 6″ range and reaches down to 1.4″. Choose a fixed-range set when your bores stay in one span, and the X-Tender when they move around. Every set on the page is listed with a 9.5″ depth.
Reading
Match the graduation to the tolerance on the print
Fixed-range sets and the 0.0005″ X-Tender read in 0.0005″ divisions, and the metric X-Tender reads in 0.01 mm. The X-Tender with 0.0001″ graduation puts a division on the dial for tolerances in the ten-thousandths. Pick the division that fits the number on your print.
Setting
A setting master kit sets the zero every reading depends on
A dial bore gage compares the bore against the diameter it was last set to, so each reading is only as good as that setting. Fowler's setting master kits set any bore gage up to 6″ (150 mm) to 0.0001″ (0.003 mm) and include a quick-release holder. The kits come with an economy gage block set and a Certificate of Calibration to N.I.S.T., or without blocks if you already own a set. The same fixture also sets external tools such as micrometers and caliper gages.
Common questions
A dial bore gage reads the bore against the diameter it was last set to, not against a scale of its own. A setting master gives it a known diameter to zero against, so every reading after that holds up. Fowler's setting master kits set any bore gage up to 6″ (150 mm) to 0.0001″ (0.003 mm).
A fixed-range set is built for one span, 0.7″ to 1.5″ or 2″ to 6″. The X-Tender reaches 1.4″ to 6″ (35 to 160 mm) from a single gage, with 0.0005″ or 0.0001″ graduation in inch and 0.01 mm in metric. Choose by how many bore sizes the work covers.
Match the division to the tolerance on the print. A tolerance of a few thousandths reads comfortably on 0.0005″ divisions, and a tolerance in the ten-thousandths is where the 0.0001″ X-Tender earns its place.
Every set comes in a fitted case with carbide anvils, an insulated grip, and a chrome plated handle. The fixed-range sets are self-centering, and the 2″ to 6″ and X-Tender sets include a 2″ contact extension. Setting masters are sold separately.
